Lessons of Darkness (1992) - Directed by Werner Herzog

--

Though you try and try so hard,
Failure is your just reward
There is a lesson you must learn
Play with fire
You must get burned

Few decisions in world history have been as stupid, cruel and arrogant as Saddam Hussein setting Kuwait's oil fields on fire in 1991, leaving behind not only scorched earth in a land that was already scorched, but also contaminated waters, blackened skies, inflation, hunger, death and more war.

The greatest irony is that there was no political, military, strategic or social gain that could justify his actions, much less their consequences.

And few filmmakers are as courageous and creative, or as capable of turning the worst news into visual and narrative poetry like Werner Herzog.

And without a trace of irony, every expense, injury and risk he takes is entirely justified, and his results even more so.

Such is the astonishing Lessons of Darkness from 1992, with images so surreal they look as though they were filmed on another planet.

I took the longest and most interesting sequence from the documentary and combined it with DKay's Fire, calling the angular result simply Fire.

And once again, Dubstep emerges as the perfect soundtrack, featuring samples of Cutty Ranks' voice and the poetry that sums it all up: after all, if you can't keep up with the leaders, then get out of the race.
