The Third Man (1949) - Directed by Carol Reed

Absolutely everything Orson Welles did in his lifetime is remarkable: writing, narrating, directing, acting.

Even the dozens of films he never finished became the basis and influence for many other projects later completed by numerous directors.

One of my favourite performances of his is in the 1949 film The Third Man by director Carol Reed, where he plays Harry Lime, a… penicillin thief.

Carol Reed is also exceptional, and his command of shadows and contrasts in this film is practically a school of cinematography and direction, even though the movie contains one of the worst continuity errors in film history.

But that’s fine, cats are not particularly interested in rehearsing, and two different cats acting in the same scene might even be some kind of subliminal message or a form of meta-language, or perhaps the same cat disguised as another cat, or maybe even Orson Welles himself disguised as a cat.

I once met a penicillin thief myself, and they are capable of anything, so we will probably never know.

Shadows and contrasts are also essential in electronic music as in the classic Crystal House composed by the producer Hokusai (an alter ego of Source Direct), following the best Jungle Music school from the second half of the 1990s, full of empty spaces and labyrinths fully Dub inspired.

Orson Welles was no Tom Cruise, he ran poorly, shot poorly, and certainly did not take risks while filming.

What mattered to him was not losing his sense of style, just notice this unusually clean sewer with almost crystal clear water in the tunnels where he flees in the film.

Given his limited effort, the penicillin supply was already running low, and despite the surname Lime the important thing was simply not to slip, so I could not resist another slippery pun and called this short film The Crystal Sewer.
